Melinna & Joshua Mixon Farms Wedding Bradenton, Florida

New Promises Amid Old World Charm

Bradenton Florida Wedding

Melinna and Joshua are THAT couple.

The couple where it only takes one look to see how much they are in love.  The couple who compliment one another.  Cherish one another.  Laugh together.  Work together.  The couple who look sooooo adorably cute together.   All of the sappy one liners, and mushy love songs.

They are just that good:  Together.

When Melinna contacted me about capturing her wedding, we immediately clicked.  Through the two year planning phase, she would often text, or check in just to say hello.  She has this amazing spirit, and upbeat personality which is contagious; you can’t help but smile when you are around her.  And Joshua?  He is just as kind, with the most generous heart. He has just graduated from College with his photography degree, so we often geek out together speaking photography gear talk. (I am a hugger.  And every time I see them, they both greet me with a big hug and a smile.)

They had this vision for their wedding day.  One of old world charm with a Southern twist, and found just what they were looking for in Mixon Farms.

Mixon Farms is a hidden gem located in Bradenton, Florida.  The venue is a working Citrus Orchard, with picturesque groves of oranges waiting to be explored.  A beautiful white gazebo beckons guests to relax in it’s shade, bordered by a large koi pond with fountain and lighting.  Garden paths tempt you to take a leisurely stroll amid meticulously maintained flower beds, or into their butterfly garden.

A large covered Pavilion awaits to shelter guests, adorned with beautiful, hanging chandeliers.  Antique blue doors form the perfect backdrop for photo opportunities, beside functioning as a divider between the Pavilion and  service building.

On the day of their wedding, we arrived early to be greeted by Mixon Farm’s wedding coordinator, Sherri McFarland.  In all my year’s working in the industry, I have never met a nicer, or more efficient coordinator.  (Whatever we needed, Sherri was already on it or happy to provide.  Bonus points for her continuous smile)

Melinna and her squad moved into the bridal suite to begin preparations for the Big Day.  A vintage cart held fresh fruit, pastries and Mimosa’s for plenty of toasting. Pampering began with hair and make-up provided by Dolled Up Brides. Amid music and laughter, Melinna calmly waited, knowing she would soon be marrying her true love–Joshua.  Once all the bridesmaids were ready, it was Melinna’s turn to get dressed in her classic, ivory gown with the assistance of her Mother, and Maid of Honor and Sister, Merrily.  In a private moment, with just the three of them, Melinna stepped into her gown.  My heart always catches when I witness this moment. The knowing and love in the Mother’s eyes, seeing her little girl in her wedding gown for the first time. The bond between sisters. The eternal, unconditional love. Gone is all sibling rivalry. Any squabbles or sisterly jab.  In this moment, there is only an outpouring of love so strong, its tangible.

The bride did her grand reveal to the rest of her girls, and was immediately surrounded.  Tears, laughter and some inappropriate jokes followed, but then I witnessed something amazing.  Each woman gathered around the bride, and placed a hand upon her. Merrily led a prayer for her health, happiness and marriage.  This prayer circle lifted the air in the small room, immediately filling it with peace and calmness.

While Melinna and the girls were finishing up, the guys moved into the Groom’s suite.  Joshua and his crew wore classic Navy suits, with burgundy accents. They even channeled their inner superpower’s, each man sporting a pair of “Super hero” socks after their favorite Marvel character.  Joshua’s mom spent a quiet moment with him alone, pinning on his boutonniere and offering well wishes.

The couple even wore matching Converse!

Countdown to the Ceremony

As guests gathered for the ceremony, a rainstorm blew in. Since the ceremony was scheduled to be held outdoors in front of the grand gazebo, we held our breath; and stalled.  Luckily, the storm lasted only a few moments, and we jumped into high gear drying all the chairs for the guests.  Talk about moving quickly!  Within minutes, all the seats were filled awaiting the Big Moment.

Joshua and his groomsmen took their place at the alter, as the bridal procession began.  Emotional tears fell from his eyes, upon seeing Melinna for the first time.  The couple exchanged personal vows in front of family and friends, and finished off their “I do’s” with a sweeping kiss that brought laughter to us all.

The reception was held outside, under the large Pavilion and catered by A Fresh Connection Catering.

Music and laughter echoed through the air courtesy of TLS Entertainment who kept the party goers moving with tune after tune.

He included a little wedding surprise into the night with a hilarious “Barbie Doll” game of “Who does it best”.  (I think Melinna won this one Josh)

Cheers and well wishes rang out during their Grand exit.  As guests lined the walkway sparklers in hand, illuminating the path towards their new life as Husband and Wife.

I am truly honored to know these two remarkable people, and consider it a privilege to have captured their Wedding Day.  I would also like to give a round of applause for the staff at Mixon Farms; your service and attention to detail was flawless and exceptional.

Melinna & Joshua, I wish you all the happiness one heart can hold; and many, many years of Cross-Fit circuits.

Melissa & Robbie Starlite Majesty Cruise Clearwater, Florida Wedding

Set A Course For Love

Starlite Majesty Cruise Wedding

Have you ever met someone, and instantly just clicked? They are just so open, and friendly–and real?

Well, that is Melissa.   She is warm, gracious, and so incredibly kind.  The type of person you can just “hang” with, and be yourself.

When I met Melissa about two year’s ago, her and Robbie had just gotten engaged  and were beginning their wedding plans. Then surprise!  They were expecting!

All plans changed.

Delaying their wedding until after their little one’s birth, gave them a reprieve from all the wedding planning chaos.  And time to take some fun and precious maternity photos with me in St. Petersburg.

So, when their wedding day finally arrived, they felt more like family than clients.

We stepped aboard the elegant Starlite Majesty in Clearwater, ready to embark on their 3 hour private cruise.  The Captain greeted us as we moved up the gang plank, and the staff hustled efficiently through the below decks, ensuring all preparations were complete for the upcoming celebration.

Melissa wore a classic, ivory gown from Flora’s Bridal in Brandon, with timeless pearl accents.  Robbie looked devilishly handsome in his navy suit, with an intimate detail.  A tie pin belonging to his late Father.

The couple exchanged their vows mid-ship, in a touching ceremony officiated by the groom’s Uncle.  After their “I Do’s” and first kiss as husband and wife, we climbed top side to capture some portraits despite the increasing winds.

From there we were ushered below decks, which had been transformed into an elegant reception area.  Mirror lined walls reflected the natural light, keeping the interior bright and cheerful.  Guests were treated to amazing views of Clearwater’s shoreline and waterway’s as we cruised along.

Did I mention the sound track?  Oh my gosh, Melissa had the BEST music playing!  Who does not looove the Smashing Pumpkins?? Tegan, my second shooter and I, were singing aloud with guests to all the great selections.

Before we knew it, the journey was over and we had entered port.  We began to prepare to disembark.

But, Mother Nature had other plans.

A severe storm blew in, with high winds and the possibility of a tornado.  I am talking sideways blowing, pelting rains.  For safety reasons, all guests had to remain on-board until the warning cleared.  I must commend the Captain and staff of the Starlite Majesty who remained calm and orderly to assure all guests were comfortable and soothed during the process.

Typical to Florida, the storm blew out as quickly as it had blown in.  And our time aboard the Majesty had ended.

Melissa & Robbie, I wish you smooth sailing, and all the happiness and joy you can find.  I am honored to have shared in your Wedding Day, and privileged to call you friends.

Ashley & Corey The Grand Belle Holly, Michigan Wedding

Rustic Elegance at The Grand Belle

Holly, Michigan Wedding

I have known the bride, Ashley for many years, since she was a young girl in Girl Scouts.  She has one of those smiles that will light up the room, and a laugh that is contagious.

When she contacted me about capturing her wedding, I was honored and thrilled.  And to be honest, a lot emotional.   You see, her family is like a second family to me.  We have weathered the years of Girl Scout meetings and events, the tween years, into High School and Marching Band.

I have watched her grow into this amazing, capable, and caring woman who just graduated with her Nursing degree.

Corey, her husband is enrolled in the Michigan State Police Program, and they had spent the last few months apart while he completed his training.  Their wedding day was going to be the first time they had seen one another in two months!

We started the day at Allure Hair Company in Fenton.  The studio and staff were amazing.  Ashley and her squad spent the morning being pampered, with Mimoa’s, hair and make-up.

Holly. MIchigan Weddiing

Ashley & Corey chose an intimate, rustic venue for their ceremony and reception.  The grounds of The Grand Belle in Holly, Michigan are beautiful.  But, the old barn gracing the property and hosting the reception is the pièce de ré·sis·tance!

Holly, Michigan Wedding

With its wide, oak beams and weathered exterior, the Barn takes us back to days gone by.  The interior is updated and outfitted with elegant touches, such as a glorious crystal chandelier which hangs over the dance floor.  Original windows stream plenty of natural light, and add to the rustic charm.

There is a bridal suite attached with all the amenities one could ask for.  Below the barn, the cellar has been transformed into a gorgeous guest gathering area, with sliding doors accessing the outdoors and lawns.  A fire pit, lawn games and relaxed seating await guests who wish to explore.

Ashley wore an ivory lace gown, with pearl details.  Her bridal party was outfitted in Gray and Plum.

Ashley and her mom, Trish, are very crafty and created all the decor elements.  Each table setting had a different arrangement embellished by guests at her bridal shower.  How clever is that?

The Ring Bearers appeared all dressed in black, wearing sunglasses and carrying “security” cases.  These two little guys put on a show.

The ceremony took place in front of the barn, beneath the shade of Oak and Maples.  They said their “I do’s” in front of a white arch adorned with flowers while guests looked on.

After the ceremony, the reception moved inside that glorious barn.  The couple danced the night away amid family and friends, their love never more tangible.

They say a bride just glows, and Ashley was no exception.  You could often hear her laughter ring out, and the constant joy on her face.

I wish Ashley & Corey many, many years of happiness, love and laughter.  Thank you for permitting me to share in your Love Story.

Whitney & Jeff Fort Desoto Beach

Romance at Sunset

I met Whitney & Jeff awhile ago.  In fact, I was lucky enough to do their maternity photos.

So,  when she asked about a Family Portrait session on the beach, at sunset–I knew it would be amazing.

We chose one of my favorite locations, Fort Desoto Park Beach–where the views are spectacular, the water is always welcoming, and the white, powdery sand goes on for miles.  There is a pier, an old historic fort, and dunes galore to explore.  It is very private, and you do not need to fight the crowds.

We started out with a few shots for their Christmas card in long sleeved buffalo check plaid, (Not easy to do in November when it is still 80 degrees) then moved down the beach for some fun in the sun.  It was their 11 month old sons first time experiencing the ocean, and he was not sure what to think about the retreating waves.  I could not help but laugh as he tried to eat the sand, and kicked his feet in the water.

Whitney tried everything to get Odin to smile, but all he wanted to do was chew on his fist or little fingers.  (We found out later he was teething, when 4 little teeth emerged at once)  I guess we were lucky he has such a good nature.

Family Sunset session

Sunset family session

Sunset Family sessionThen it was Whitney & Jeff’s turn for some couple photos.  (Thankfully my daughter Meghan was along, as she got to play with the little guy while we continued our photo shoot)

Thanks Meg!

Sunset Family sessionEvery time I am lucky enough to get these two in front of my camera, I have so much fun.  They are naturals!  Their love and connection is tangible.

Whitney is also a photographer, so she needs zero prompting in the posing department.  She nails it each time!

And Jeff?  He just dotes on his family, and is all smiles and laughter.

Side note: Be careful when going barefoot down dune paths.  We found out–the hard way–there are picker and thorn plants hiding everywhere.  We had to stop mid-way through our shoot to extract the pesky things.  Let me just say, OUCH!

I am so blessed to know this incredible family, and honored they continue to chose me to capture their special life moments.

I cannot wait till our next session.

Enjoy!

Hugs,

Sue

Ashley + Jeff Keel & Curley Winery Wedding

April Shower’s the Couple with love

Keel & Curley winery

For almost 2 years, April 7, 2018 was booked on my calendar.

When Ashley & Jeff planned their wedding day, they had visions of strolling along the vineyards at Keel & Curley Winery, enjoying a fine glass of Sweet Blueberry or Strawberry Fusion.

Maybe taking a ride on the Trolley, or wandering through the acres of blueberries.  They would meet in the arbor for their first look, and I as their photographer, would snap away capturing all the emotion and beauty.

Wrong.  The weather had other plans for us that day, when a pop up spring storm threatened the outdoor venue and festivities.

It could have gone south.  Real fast.   But, it didn’t.

To my amazement, Ashley remained calm and nonplussed —I mean she did not let one flicker of irritation show.  She was about to marry her true love, and the man of her dreams.  That is all that truly mattered.

Keel & Curley Winery Wedding

The wedding party kicked into high gear and moved up the timeline, allowing Ashley & Jeff to exchange their vows in front of a beautiful gazebo, before the first raindrops fell.  Their infant daughter rode down the aisle in a custom “Cinderella” style carriage, created by Ashley’s stepfather.

Keel & Curley’s rustic venue took on a timeless, elegance with all the Pink and Gray details, Ashley and her mother worked hard to create.

The newlywed’s danced under a pavilion with twinkling lights, as family and guests looked on.  There they received the most amazing gift.  Ashley’s daughter serenaded them with a Disney classic from the Little Mermaid.

Then, the rains blew in.  Hard.  So hard in fact, my camera bag flooded and I lost a flash and a memory card to the damage.  (Side note:  I learned the importance of having water proof everything)

But, even the rain could not dampen the happiness and overwhelming love surrounding the couple.

You see, Ashley has this infectious personality.  She just exudes happiness with her deep, contagious laugh, and sparkling blue eyes.   I can honestly say, she is one of the happiest people I have been blessed to know.  And Jeff?  He is just as laid back and handsome, with killer blue eyes.

True to Florida, the rain left as quickly as it came in.

We danced the night away to the house band.  Ashley and Jeff took the stage for their bouquet, garter toss and some impromptu fun, while guests and restaurant patrons cheered them on.

I am honored to have shared in the wedding of Ashley & Jeff, and so thankful and blessed to call them friends.

We did manage to schedule a re-shoot at the venue, and were blessed with sunny skies and nice weather.      Heck, it gave Ashley and Jeff another opportunity to get dressed up.  This time, without the pressure.

If you are ever in Plant City, Florida, go check out Keel & Curley Winery.  I am sure you will find the venue charming, and the wine even better.

Absolutely Adorable April

Welcome April Christine!

They say you never know love until you hold your child in your arms.

That immediate need to protect. The awe and powerful feeling of a love so deep, so strong, your heart aches with it.

But, when it’s your Grandchild?

Let me tell you, I was one hot, sappy mess. The emotions racing through me changed from amazement that my child, the baby I rocked to sleep, created this little miracle.

(How can that be true? And how did I get this old?)

To an unconditional love so deep, so profound, you don’t think you can love them anymore than you already do. Then you wake tomorrow to find that love has grown deeper still. How is that even possible??

December brought this little angel into the world, on a cold, blustery, winter day in Michigan. My son Andrew, and daughter in law, Stephanie were scheduled to be induced, but April decided she did not want to wait.

Luckily, I planned on arriving a few days early.

My son picked me up from the airport, and we thought we had time.

Wrong.

Stephanie went into labor that evening. Andrew downloaded an app (I did not know such a thing even existed) to help time the contractions. And by 2 am they were off.

William Beaumont Hospital Troy

Family gathered in the wee hours at Troy Beaumont Hospital awaiting the good news.

April Christine Erdman arrived at 9:46 am on Tuesday, December 4th, 2018.

She weighed in at 6 pounds and 8 ounces, and 20 inches long.

People tell you about becoming a Grandmother for the first time. How it is going to be amazing.

You get to spoil them, then give them back.

Yep, I can see that happening. Easily.

I am already thinking about our first Disney trip, and standing in line for her to see Mickey and Minnie and she is only 2 weeks old!

For me, the most incredible thing is watching my son.  That big, tough, 6’3″ man hold his daughter with awe and love in his eyes.  To see that immediate bond, and need to protect.

And Stephanie is a natural momma.  She transitioned into the role effortlessly, and approaches each day with joy, hope and tireless love for this sweet little girl.

April is so very blessed to have incredible parents.  OK, I am probably a little biased here, but as a first time Grandma?  I am allowed.

I am so glad I was able to be there to celebrate in April’s birth. And anywhere I go, my camera goes. So be prepared for many, many more adorable baby pictures from me in the future.

Enjoy!

Hugs,

Sue

Austin & Philip St. Petersburg, Florida Morean Center for Clay Wedding

Two Grooms-One Amazing Love Story

2018-10-29_0103

“I choose You”.  Those are the words Austin & Philip shared on their wedding day.  It was their first Song, their commitment, their story.

Austin & Philip are two, amazing individuals but, together?  Let’s just say they seriously complete one another.  They have that certain something which makes you feel relaxed, and oh so comfortable, and as if you have known them for years.  When we first met to discuss their wedding, they brought along a group of friends and welcomed all questions and comments.  Right then I knew how deeply these two care about people.  They wanted to share in their excitement, and included those close to them.

How can two people be so lucky?

2018-10-29_0067The couple started their day with a large brunch hosted by their Aunt.  Amid well wishes and the day’s excitement, both grooms prepared for the day.  Austin remain at his Aunts, while Philip departed to the Hollander Hotel in downtown St. Petersburg to get ready.  Both grooms looked fabulous in their blue suits with purple accents.  Gorgeous succulents served as their boutonniere’s and took center stage in all their floral arrangements.

The couple met for an emotional first look, then exchanged personal letters to one another prior to their ceremony.  They opted to read them together, in a touching pre-ceremony commitment.

Austin & Philip’s celebration was held at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, Florida.  A historic train station transformed into a gorgeous venue with exposed brick walls, and period details.  The ceremony was even more special, as Austin’s Uncle officiated their marriage.  They exchanged vows with a traditional hand fasting, where silk cords were draped over their hands and pulled taught.  This is where the term “tying the knot” comes from.  There was not a dry eye in the house.

Their reception was a Mid Summer’s Night Dream.  Guests danced to the live sound of the Bay Kings Band upon a floor transformed into a deep, blue lake.  Trees constructed of vines and floral’s surrounded the dance floor, taking guests into a land of enchantment.

We made sure to sneak out for a few pictures at sunset, and the sky did not disappoint. Philip has a vintage VW Bug convertible they wanted included in the portraits, and we even threw in some confetti–well, just because it’s confetti!  I can honestly say, I have not had this much fun at a wedding in a long time.  I am honored to have been chosen to share in your Wedding Day.

Congratulations Austin & Philip.  Wishing you many, many years of happiness.

Please enjoy just a small sampling of Austin & Philips wedding day.

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

My photography journey started many years ago as a hobby.  I actually received my first “real” camera from my parents for my high school graduation, as a way to document my journey through life.  This was a time way before cell phones, and capturing those every day moments, not even a consideration as yet.

My camera went everywhere with me.  In truth, I became that annoying person always asking people to stop and take their photograph.  My interest had me taking courses as optional electives in college.  Yep, back in the dark room days!  But still, I never considered it a career.  Family and friends were always asking me to take their pictures, but mainly I focused on capturing the day to day and growth of my own children.

Fast forward a few years, where life seemed to just be rolling along fine and bam!  It happened.  I was diagnosed with Syringomyelia after the birth of my youngest child.  I was told I needed emergency surgery, and listened to the physicians.  The surgery forever changed my life.  I remember the day clearly, all these years later.  The morning of my surgery, I refused to take the elevator to the 5th floor.  I raced  (my now ex-husband) up the stairs, confident all would go well.  We laughed, pushing one another out of the way, elbows flying.  (We were both very competitive and avid runners.)

Upon waking from the surgery, I felt off.  It was then I realized I had been taken to ICU, because I was having difficulties with my blood pressure.  As the anesthesia wore off, it became clear I had no feeling below my chest.  I mean, how could this be?  I ran 2 miles every day, was a varsity cheer coach, and really, I felt invincible.  Well, no.  That me died that day.  And I had to learn all over again exactly who I was.

Months of physical therapy, the embarrassment of having total strangers bathe or assist you to the bathroom, defeated me.  But, I was lucky.  I am truly stubborn.  My illness played havoc on my marriage, but I was blessed with three amazing children and incredible neighbors.  I can remember them bringing my children, and Meghan a baby to physical therapy.  Placing my little girl at the end of the parallel bars, and using her as my motivation to make my legs move.

I went from one step, to two.  Hours of pain and crying out of frustration.  When they said I would never walk again, my answer was simple.  Just watch me.  Despite having a slight limp in my right leg, I have pushed myself to fully recover from this set back.  Yes, I deal with daily nerve pain.  Horrible burning and spasms.  But, I never give up.

After this ordeal, I re-evaluated my life.  Looking back through images, I saw the power in capturing those moments.  It was then my hobby turned into my calling.

Photography has changed my life.  It has given me a way to express my creativity while serving others through my craft.  My goal is for someone to look at their image, and to feel all those swirling emotions they felt when it was taken.  A way to take them back in time, preserving the memory forever.

My hope is by sharing my story, I can give you my readers the courage to chase your dreams.  To never give up.  Even when your days seem dark, know this too shall pass.  And tomorrow holds so much promise.

Talk soon,

Sue
